Monitoring A Micro Climate – Plants

Manchester “Eco Dad” Try’s Out Energy Meter

The discover for the reporter was the cost of running his home entertainment system – TV etc. at 4p per hour with the potential to save £350 a year if he could eliminate the waste useage.
Dehems Dashboard Goes Live!
Posted by: | CommentsThe DEHEMS Dashboard has now been launched enabling users to view their home energy consumption LIVE! Every six seconds readings are taken via the energy monitor providing a unique insight into how exactly energy is being used.
The aim of DEHEMS is to create the tools for efficient energy usage. Dehems participants will be able to view their own homes data and compare against other DEHEMS users. This should highlight potential energy wasting items ithat could be replaced with more energy efficient ones, saving energy and therefore money in the long run.
Current Cost energy meters on trial
Posted by: | CommentsDehems will be running the first tests of it’s energy monitoring system using energy meters from Current Cost. The Current Cost meter monitors energy use in real-time, and displays the information on a display panel. It can be installed easily and does not require additional wiring. Energy use is measured by placing a simple clip around the insulated power cable as it emerges from the meter box. The clip is connected to a small transmitter that sends a signal to the display box, telling home owners exactly how much electricity is being used at any given time. As well as viewing energy usage as it happens, the meter can connected to a computer to allow historic data to be viewed.
Smart Appliance EU Project

Smart-A is an EU project with 9 partners from 4 EU countries, including University of Manchester. The aim is to examine if it possible for smart appliances to adapt their operation to variations in energy supply. For example, domestic appliances can offer a range of options for load-shifting, including delaying the start of washing or dishwashing cycles or the use of refrigerators and freezers for temporarily storing energy. GreenShift Launch
Posted by: | CommentsThe Green Shift Taskforce was launched on 19/09/08 featuring DEHEMS as an exemplar project. The launch attended by Phil Woolas MP Minister of State for Climate Change and Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council and took place in a local resident’s home, showcasing use of a first implementation of energy monitoring equipment. A report was included on the local BBC News programme, North West Tonight and is available on the BBC website.
